Cozy mystery KDP categories: the exact Kindle shelves (2026)

Where cozy mysteries live on Amazon.com's Kindle store, what each shelf is for, and how to pick the three that give a new book its best shot.

The cozy shelves on Amazon.com, as of October 2026

We read these from Amazon.com's public Kindle Best Sellers pages on October 17, 2026. Under Kindle Store › Kindle eBooks › Mystery, Thriller & Suspense › Mystery, the Cozy shelf has four sub-shelves:

Kindle path (after "Mystery ›")Best for
CozyThe parent shelf. Every cozy fits, so it's the most crowded.
Cozy › AnimalsA cat, dog or other animal is part of the hook, not just set dressing.
Cozy › Books, Bookstores & LibrariesBookshop owners, librarians, book clubs, literary puzzles.
Cozy › Crafts & HobbiesKnitting, quilting, scrapbooking, antiques, gardening hobbies.
Cozy › CulinaryBakeries, cafés, caterers, recipes in the back of the book.

Cozies also fit several neighbouring Mystery shelves on the same page: Amateur Sleuth, Women Sleuths, Traditional Detectives, Historical, International Mystery & Crime, LGBTQ+ Mystery and Series. Paranormal cozies (witches, ghosts) can also look at Suspense › Paranormal and Suspense › Ghosts.

Verify on KDP before using. These are the Kindle store's shelves as shown on its public charts. KDP's picker can word things slightly differently, Amazon adds and renames shelves, and paperback and hardcover use a separate Books tree that this guide doesn't cover. Our category finder links to each live chart so you can check.

How KDP categories work now

  • You choose three. KDP's help page says you can select 3 categories when creating a book, and you can edit them later from your Bookshelf.
  • Per format. KDP notes that some categories aren't available for every format, and they differ by marketplace. Pick for your primary marketplace first.
  • Allow 72 hours. KDP says new category placements can take up to 72 hours to display.
  • Keywords help with shelving too. KDP says that if you can't find a specific category, keywords help Amazon decide how to "shelve" your book.
  • KDP can move you. If a category doesn't match the content, KDP says it may remove or change it. On r/selfpublish, several authors describe Amazon placing their books based on reader behaviour, even after they asked for a change.
  • The old "email for ten categories" trick is gone. SmartKDP's category reference explains that since mid-2023 KDP shows Amazon's own store categories directly and no longer takes email requests for extra categories. KDP's current help describes no such process. Ignore older guides that tell you to email.

Which cozy shelf fits your book?

Ask what a shopper would type, or what would make them stop scrolling. If your blurb's first line mentions the bakery, Culinary is honest. If the cat is on the cover and solves half the clues, Animals is honest. If your sleuth runs a bookshop, Books, Bookstores & Libraries was made for you.

Amateur Sleuth vs. Women Sleuths vs. Cozy. These overlap heavily, and a long-running cozy author's explainer notes the confusion they cause. As a rule of thumb: Cozy is about tone (violence off the page, community, humour). Amateur Sleuth is about who investigates (not a cop). Women Sleuths is about the lead. A typical cozy honestly fits all three, so the question is which specific shelf gives you the best chance.

Choosing your three: a simple method

  1. One specific cozy sub-shelf that matches your hook (Culinary, Animals, Crafts & Hobbies, or Books, Bookstores & Libraries).
  2. One sleuth shelf: Amateur Sleuth or Women Sleuths.
  3. One setting or flavour shelf, if honest: Historical, International Mystery & Crime, LGBTQ+ Mystery, Series, or a second cozy sub-shelf.

Before you commit, open each shelf's live chart and look at the top 20 covers. If your cover would look out of place there, readers will feel it too. KDP's own advice is to balance popularity and relevance: not so broad that your book gets lost, not so narrow that nobody browses it.

Example: a first-in-series bakery cozy with a cat sidekick and a woman lead might choose Mystery › Cozy › Culinary, Mystery › Cozy › Animals and Mystery › Women Sleuths.

Common mistakes

  • Only choosing "Mystery". It's the busiest shelf in the genre. Go specific.
  • Choosing a shelf the blurb doesn't support. If you pick Culinary but the blurb never mentions food, shoppers (and Amazon) get mixed signals. Run your blurb through the blurb grader; it checks for cozy signals.
  • Dark content on a cozy shelf. Cozy readers expect violence off the page. A gory blurb on a cozy shelf invites bad reviews.
  • Forgetting print. Your paperback needs its own three categories from the Books tree.
